Background: This study aimed to evaluate the relationships among critical thinking disposition, general self-efficacy, technical skill confidence, professional value, and nursing competency in simulations and identify the factors influencing nursing competency.
Methods: In this descriptive study, 114 senior nursing students in a university completed a questionnaire on critical thinking disposition, general self-efficacy, technical skill confidence, professional value, and nursing competency in simulations, before and after completing a 15-session simulation-based education program over eight weeks. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, oneway ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression.
Results: The analyses revealed positive correlations for nursing competency with grade point average, critical thinking disposition, general self-efficacy, and skill confidence. Strong predictors of nursing competency after simulation-based education were critical thinking disposition, skill confidence, grade point average, and pre-nursing competency; these accounted for 31% of the variance in nursing competency.
Conclusion: This study revealed that developing critical thinking disposition and skill confidence in undergraduate nursing education is important to improve nursing competency in simulation training.
